Windrush Magazine 2019

It is one year since National Windrush Day was announced to commemorate the first wave of people who arrived in Britain on the SS Empire Windrush and to celebrate this BHM 365 have produced a sister magazine, WINDRUSH DAY 2019 which is now available.

Since June 1948,  thousands have ventured to Britain to explore the possibilities of a new life and now these pioneers have  a legacy and a place they call home. Whilst we appreciate and acknowledge the struggles faced with integration, recognition and social cohesion, as a resilient people we have overcome many adversities and continue to campaign for rights and justice in all walks of life where it is wanting.

This first and pioneering issue of The Windrush Day 2019 Magazine  captures the very essence of some of those struggles as well as some of the countless positive and uplifting stories as we continue the walk of  life producing seeds that bear good fruit.

We continue to face challenges on a daily basis, not least of which is the mentoring and training of those who fall into crime or victims of racial bias, abuse, or mental health problems – all of which are regularly featured on our website.  Not to be ignored are the potential challenges of Brexit for the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora all of which are topical at the moment.

In the midst of this, we celebrate. National Windrush Day is a day that, thanks to the foresight of those early pioneers, will be documented in British History and it is those pioneers and all who came after that lead the way for all migrants to be recognised and valued in Britain as we know it today.

Encompassing people from all walks of life and professions, from artists to nurses and carers, teachers to engineers, politicians, scientists and entrepreneurs it is truly a multi-faceted and inspirational story that has just begun to be told.
